The SENTINEL

This is my interpretation of an existing lighthouse in New England, Annisquam Light in Massachusetts. I have visited many lighthouses over the years because something about them calls to me. Throughout their history they protected ships and boats from dangerous shores and were built to withstand the fierce winds and water of ocean storms. In this scene, I placed a young boy who is fishing because of my own feelings that I have when near a lighthouse by the ocean -- safety and a serene peace. I imagined sitting on the rocks smelling the sea air and feeling a gentle breeze, on a warm sunny day. And of course, I thought that my grandson would like to enjoy being there also.

While Ed and I lived in Northport, Long Island, we went for sailing lessons on one of the bays on the North Shore. Ed already knew the basics from growing up with a Sun Fish at the family lake house. It was all new to me. And I loved it. I recall that it was an 18' sail boat. Since I have always loved being in and around water, I have fond memories of learning to sail. Navigating with an understanding of and feeling for the wind and water was exciting. I clearly am attracted to scenes with sail boats but also any bodies of water, including streams and rivers.

TACKING

I decided that I wanted to paint an abstract scene and saw that a few artists had done this with a water scene so that reflections uniquely enhance the scene. Water, trees and sky are the landscape elements. The colors including the reflections were the fun part for me. And of course, are what made this painting abstract.
